Mediterranean summer vibes, all year long

Top

Today, I’m sharing one of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful escapes: Porquerolles island. Often called the pearl of the Îles d’Or, I immediately understood why upon arrival: endless turquoise waters, lush nature, and above all, a true sense of calm. Here, cars are left behind, you explore the island on foot or by bike. Pure bliss.

I’m taking you along to discover this Mediterranean gem, which I visited on a day trip during my stay in Hyères, and I’m sharing the best things to do in Porquerolles island.

Porquerolles island is very easy to reach. The fastest option is to take the shuttle boats from La Tour Fondue port on the Giens peninsula, with crossings running all year round. In less than 15 minutes, you arrive at the charming port of Porquerolles. A round trip costs €24 during high season.

There are also ferry connections from the port of Hyères, with a journey that lasts around 45 minutes.

The small harbour village is absolutely charming, with several bike rental shops (around €20 per day). Without wasting any time, we headed straight towards the beaches of Porquerolles

Things to do in Porquerolles island

The island’s must-see beaches

Porquerolles island is best known for its idyllic beaches and hidden coves. We first discovered Plage d’Argent, a beautiful stretch of fine sand lined with pine trees, just a 10-minute bike ride from the port. I especially loved its shallow, crystal-clear water.

Another beach you can’t miss is Notre-Dame Beach. It is particularly spectacular, as the road leading there overlooks the bay, offering breathtaking views of its turquoise lagoon. The anchored boats and vibrant colours blend together and form a scene that truly took my breath away!

In September, we had no trouble finding space, but the sandy area is quite narrow and can quickly become crowded during peak season.

Other beaches are also well worth a visit, such as Langoustier Beach on the western tip of the island and La Courtade Beach, both famous for their clear turquoise waters. The coves along the southern coast of Porquerolles also offer stunning viewpoints over the deep blue sea below.

Exploring Porquerolles island by bike

What I loved most about Porquerolles island is its close connection to nature, made even stronger by the near absence of cars. We chose to rent bikes to cover more ground in one day, but it’s also possible to explore the island on foot.

Lose yourself among pine forests and olive groves, breathe in the Mediterranean air, and admire the sea views… Porquerolles truly feels like a peaceful haven where time seems to stand still.

There are also plenty of hiking trails for those who enjoy walking.

Visiting the Carmignac Foundation

Tucked away in the pine forest just a few steps from La Courtade Beach, Villa Carmignac hosts a spectacular contemporary art exhibition space. In the gardens, impressive sculptures appear between lavender bushes, olive trees, and citrus plants, all typical of the region.

Not to be missed: lunch at the Poisson Ivre, the foundation’s restaurant set in a truly enchanting environment. Without a doubt, one of the best dining spots during our stay in Hyères.

Next to the Carmignac Foundation, La Courtade vineyard is also worth a visit for wine lovers.

Boat trip around Porquerolles island

The island reveals its beauty even more from the sea! Renting a boat in Porquerolles, either independently for a few hours or as part of a guided excursion, is one of the most memorable things to do in Porquerolles island. It’s a wonderful way to see the island from a different perspective and fully appreciate its stunning coastline.

Strolling around the port of Porquerolles

Before catching the ferry back to Hyères, take some time to wander through the small streets around the port of Porquerolles. Have a look at the shops or enjoy a drink at sunset. Some lovely spots include L’Orangeraie for a drink overlooking the harbour, Le Glacier Porquerollais, Fly Deck, and Le Pélagos for a delicious break.
