A77 Suites Athens boutique hôtel à Athènes

Athens is my favourite city in the world. I lived there for several years, and I go back whenever I get the chance, always with that same thrill when stepping off the plane! It’s a city like no other, one that surprises you at every turn and truly deserves more than a quick stopover. If you’re looking for the best boutique hotels in Athens with real soul, you’re in the right place!

Because in Athens, where you choose to stay really does shape your experience. Each neighbourhood has its own atmosphere, its own distinct character, and the hotels on this list reflect that perfectly, far from the impersonal luxury hotels. Psirri looks nothing like Kolonaki, just as Gazi has nothing in common with Plaka. Here is my selection of unique addresses to immerse yourself in Athenian life and make the most of what the Greek capital has to offer.

Psirri: creative energy

Psirri is the neighbourhood I like to describe as the Trastevere of Athens, rougher, more underground. Giant murals cover crumbling facades, artisan bakeries are squeezed between two bars, antique dealers stay open late into the evening… It’s eclectic, raw, alive, authentic, and it’s precisely here that two of my favourite boutique hotels in Athens are hiding!

Mona, Meilleur boutique hôtel à Athènes

Mona Athens is a 1950s textile factory transformed by the creative duo House of Shila into something completely unexpected. Raw concrete, exposed copper pipes and industrial ceilings sit alongside vintage-style furniture. There are twenty rooms, a café-lounge, a speakeasy bar in the basement and a panoramic rooftop with views of the Acropolis.

What I love? Practically every object in the space, from ceramics to furniture to artwork, is for sale. It’s a living gallery as much as a hotel! Guest chefs from around the world are regularly invited for private Supper Clubs. Mona is Athens today in all its creativity, and to me it’s the least “hotel-like” place on this list, in the best possible way. You live the authentic Athenian experience here. A real gem and for sure my favorite boutique hotel in Athens!

Monument Hotel Athens : boutique hôtel à Athènes

Restored with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Monument Hotel Athens houses just nine rooms and suites, each one different. The painted ceiling frescoes in ochre, dusty pink and mint green inspired the entire colour palette of the rooms: warm lime-washed walls, sculpted marble balconies, the original spiral staircase. A fascinating dialogue between neoclassical Greek architecture and a clean, contemporary design that lets history speak for itself.

Monument Hotel Athens : boutique hôtel à Athènes

This is a hotel for those who want to immerse themselves in ancient and neoclassical Greece. You really feel as though you’re staying in the home of an Athenian family from another era. The Nidus Suite is the showstopper: its wooden terrace with a jacuzzi looks out over the rooftops of Psirri and the illuminated Acropolis at night. Truly magical.

Good to know: the hotel offers bespoke architectural tours of the neighbourhood, a wonderful way to discover Athens differently.

Mona and Monument are ten minutes apart on foot in Psirri. Contemporary Athenian atmosphere on one side, neoclassical grandeur on the other: two very different ways to experience the same neighbourhood.

What to do in Athens, Greece

Gazi: the hidden oasis

Gazi is the neighbourhood of the Technopolis and Athenian nightlife. People come here to go out clubbing, to enjoy concerts, and for its energy. Not really for peace and quiet… and yet! The hotel below is a genuine haven.

Not Boutique Hotel à Athènes

Behind a monumental door on a small Gazi street, you discover an atmosphere completely different from what you’d expect. A two-hundred-year-old factory, a plant-filled inner courtyard, a pool and, above all, calm.

Not Boutique Hotel leans into its industrial aesthetic with steel, glass and exposed brick, but the generous greenery that has crept in everywhere creates a striking, almost soothing contrast. The rooms are spacious, breakfast highlights local and organic produce, and the service is remarkably attentive. A true oasis at the heart of Athens’ most electric neighbourhood.

Gazi is steps away from some of the best rooftops in Athens, perfect for a lively evening out!

Kolonaki: bohemian chic

Kolonaki is the chicest neighbourhood in central Athens. You’ll find cafés where Athenians sit reading their newspaper for hours, art galleries, the Museum of Cycladic Art, and the history-laden Mount Lycabettus in the background. This is where the most secretive hotel on my list is tucked away.

Shila Athens : l'un des meilleurs boutique hôtels d'Athènes

Shila Athens occupies a 1920s house on a pedestrian street in Kolonaki, with just six suites and no visible reception. You ring the bell, step inside, and feel as though you’ve entered the apartment of an Athenian friend.

Every suite is different, with original terrazzo floors, high ceilings and antique furniture from a Greek family-run woodworking workshop dating back to the early 20th century. Breakfast arrives in a basket: bread from the local bakery, honey from Kimolos, Normandy vanilla butter, yoghurt, fresh juice. I love that kind of detail!

The rooftop regularly hosts DJ sets and exhibitions. It’s intimate, almost secret, exactly how I like it. One of my favourite boutique hotels in Athens!

Good to know: Shila and Mona were born from the same creative house, House of Shila. Same DNA, radically different atmospheres.

Historic Center: design and gastronomy

The historic centre of Athens is the beating heart of the city. Just steps away from Syntagma, Monastiraki and its markets, it’s a dense, lively neighbourhood where Athenians and tourists mix freely. The food is great, the streets are perfect for wandering and shopping, and the hotels are pretty wonderful too!

Ergon House Hotel Athens

Ergon is first and foremost a premium Greek food brand, one you’ll even find at Athens Airport! Ergon House takes that concept one step further: a hotel built above a market. The ground floor is a modern agora with a butcher, a fishmonger, a baker, a fine food shop, a restaurant and even a century-old olive tree. It’s a truly unique spot that I love wandering through whenever I’m in central Athens.

Its 38 rooms draw inspiration from the architectural traditions of the Pelion region with a Japanese touch. Breakfast is à la carte and served in the market downstairs. It’s the only hotel on this list where you can buy feta and candied figs before heading up to your room! I think the concept is brilliant. If you’re a bit of a foodie, you’ll love it. I’ve put together a full article on the Greek specialities you can’t miss to help you plan your stay. And don’t miss the rooftop either!

Plaka: at the foot of the Acropolis

Plaka is the neighbourhood I always show first to anyone visiting Athens for the first time. Cobblestone streets, pastel-coloured houses, tavernas tucked under bougainvillea, it’s the ultimate Greek postcard! And yet it never feels overrun by mass tourism. And above it all, the Acropolis is right there, watching over every street corner.

A77 Suites Athens boutique hôtel à Athènes

Hidden in the lanes of Plaka, this 19th-century neoclassical building, listed as a historic monument, houses 12 suites in marble, wood and brass. You enter A77 Suites through a Greek fashion boutique, which gives the check-in an almost theatrical feel. I love it! No restaurant on site, but breakfast is delivered to your suite every morning. And in some rooms, a view of the Acropolis and the pretty terracotta rooftops of Plaka from the balcony, best enjoyed in the morning with a delicious Greek coffee in hand!

A77 Suites Athens boutique hôtel à Athènes

Opposite the Orthodox Cathedral of Athens, in the very heart of Plaka, stands an 1895 neoclassical mansion designed by Ernst Ziller, the same architect behind the Presidential Mansion and Monument Hotel in Psirri.

The Zillers counts just ten rooms, beautiful wrought iron balconies, high ceilings, and original parquet floors. And on the rooftop, a Michelin-starred restaurant with a direct view of the illuminated Acropolis in the evening. I love the idea of having breakfast or dinner facing the Parthenon in such an intimate setting. If you’re looking for more rooftop inspiration, I’ve listed my favourite rooftops in Athens here.

My tip: absolutely book a room on the Acropolis side. The view from the balcony is truly worth the extra cost.

The Athenian Riviera: the most beautiful boutique hotels in Athens, set against a turquoise backdrop

What travellers often don’t realise is that thirty minutes from the centre of Athens, the city gives way to the sea. The Athenian Riviera stretches south from Glyfada all the way to Cape Sounion, with turquoise waters, pine forests and secluded coves. The coastal scenery is truly breathtaking, especially around Vouliagmeni. I’ve listed the most beautiful beaches on the Athenian Riviera if you fancy a swim right after check-in! You’ll also find some fabulous boutique hotels along the Riviera, worthy of the finest Mediterranean coastal escapes.

Vouliagmeni: the heart of the Riviera

Vouliagmeni is Athens’ best-kept secret. A pine-fringed peninsula, turquoise waters, a natural thermal lake, seafood restaurants right at the water’s edge. Thirty minutes from the centre, and it feels like a Greek island!

The Margi Hotel Vouliagmeni : les meilleurs boutique hotels d'Athènes

The story of The Margi begins in 1960, when Dr Yiangos Stavridis decided to build eighteen luxury apartments in the heart of the Vouliagmeni pine forest. He named them “Margi” in honour of his two daughters, Maria and Gina. Today it’s his grandchildren who run this 88-room hotel, and the warm welcome brings out that family spirit from the moment you arrive.

Highlights include the Michelin-starred Patio restaurant (ingredients come from the hotel’s own organic farm) and a remarkable spa. What I love most about The Margi is how it delivers a high-end, luxurious experience without ever being ostentatious. The Margi is the boutique hotel that put the Athenian Riviera on the map.

The Margi Hotel Vouliagmeni : les meilleurs boutique hotels d'Athènes

Eleven suites in the heart of Vouliagmeni, just a few minutes’ walk from the beach and the thermal lake. The rooms in Somewhere Vouliagmeni are simply decorated but the light is soft and warm, and it’s the kind of place where you really come because of its location. The rooftop penthouse with a jacuzzi offers an unbeatable view over the bay below.

Cap Sounion: at the end of the road

Driving south from Athens along the coastal road to Cape Sounion is an experience in itself. You follow the sea, pass hidden coves, and then, at the end of the road, the Temple of Poseidon appears on its clifftop. A majestic and timeless place!

Technically, this isn’t a boutique hotel, it’s a resort. But the setting is so unique that I simply had to include it! The Grecotel Cape Sounio is nestled within an archaeological site on the shores of the Aegean Sea, facing the Temple of Poseidon. Time seems to slow down here, you live at the pace of nature. What I love: its palace-like feel surrounded by lush greenery, two private beaches and a farm-to-table kitchen using produce from the hotel’s own garden.

My tip: book a room with a view of the temple and the sea. At night, illuminated on the hilltop, it’s one of the most beautiful sights in the Athens region.

FAQ: the best boutique hotels in Athens

What is the best neighbourhood to stay in Athens?

It all depends on what you’re looking for! For an immersion in creative, contemporary Athens, Psirri is the best option in my opinion. For neoclassical charm and typical narrow streets, choose Plaka! For a chic, local atmosphere far from mass tourism, Kolonaki is the perfect neighbourhood. And if you want to combine Athens and the sea, I’d recommend the Athenian Riviera, and Vouliagmeni in particular. It is a true little paradise!

Which boutique hotel in Athens has the best Acropolis view?

Good news, several hotels on this list offer Acropolis views! The Zillers has a Michelin-starred rooftop with a direct view of the illuminated Acropolis and in the evening, it is truly magical. Monument Hotel has a suite with a jacuzzi terrace looking out over the Psirri rooftops and the Acropolis in the background. Mona Athens and Ergon House also have rooftops with views. A77 Suites offers a partial view of the Acropolis from certain rooms. In any case, mention your preference when booking!

How much does a boutique hotel in Athens cost?

Prices vary depending on the season and neighbourhood. Expect to pay between €150 and €250 per night for a quality boutique hotel in the city centre. Addresses on the Athenian Riviera, like The Margi or Grecotel Cape Sounio, are closer to €300 to €500 in high season. The good news is that the low season (November to March, excluding holidays) often brings great deals on these same addresses!

Should you book boutique hotels in Athens well in advance?

Yes, really! Even more so for the smaller addresses on this list. Monument Hotel has just nine rooms, Shila Athens only six suites. In high season (June to September), these hotels fill up months in advance. I’d recommend booking as soon as your trip is confirmed, especially if you have your eye on a specific room like the Nidus Suite at Monument or the Acropolis-view room at The Zillers.

What is the best time to visit Athens?

April-May and September-October, without hesitation! The weather is mild, the sites are less crowded and prices are more accessible than in the height of summer. July and August are the hottest months, often above 35°C, and the busiest for tourists. The Athenian winter is mild (the sun is usually shining, I’ve often gone swimming at Christmas!) and perfect for visiting museums and neighbourhoods without the crowds. Athens deserves so much more than a quick stopover between islands!
