Mediterranean summer vibes, all year long

The best mediterranean destinations

Last Updated June 5, 2026

The best Mediterranean destinations have three things in common: dream landscapes, pretty villages where you could spend hours on a terrace over a local meal, and a sea that shifts through a thousand shades of blue.

As you probably know, it’s my favourite region in the world. I spend almost every holiday and weekend there whenever I get the chance! So I’ve been asked countless times: “what’s actually the best place to go in the Mediterranean?” And my answer is always the same: it depends on what you love doing, and the kind of atmosphere you’re after. The Mediterranean is a vast region with incredibly diverse cultures!

Milos and Mykonos, for example, are both classic Cycladic islands, but they’re completely different trips. There’s a Mediterranean for those who want to escape the world, and one for those who want to dive right into it. The one you’ve been dreaming about for years, and the one you find completely by accident.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from travelling around so many Mediterranean destinations, it’s that the best one is the one that feels right for you, not the most famous one on the map!

So rather than a generic ranking, I’ve organised my favourite destinations into four profiles to help you find the one that sounds like you. I haven’t been to every single place on this list (though most of them!), but they’re all destinations I’d love to visit. And yes, there’s a lot of Greece in here. Those of you who know me won’t be surprised 😁. So here are 40+ of the best Mediterranean destinations.

You’ve seen Santorini in photos hundreds of times. You still want to go, and you’re right to! Some destinations live up to their reputation, as long as you know how to approach them. These places are well-known, very touristy, sometimes very expensive. But there’s a reason they’re on everyone’s list.

Here are the best Mediterranean destinations for an unforgettable and iconic trip.

Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos Town

Mykonos divides people. Those who love it and those who avoid it, often without having been. The truth: the island is beautiful, the wind is strong (it really is), the south beaches are spectacular, and Little Venice at sunset is one of the most beautiful sights in the Mediterranean. Yes, it’s expensive, and timing matters. But Mykonos genuinely deserves better than its reputation as an open-air nightclub! It’s packed with excellent restaurants and beach clubs, which are really its main draw.

Santorini, Greece

The best mediterranean destinations: Santorini, Greece

Santorini is the typical Greek postcard, most associated with the village of Oia. But it’s so much more: the caldera seen from Fira, the black and red volcanic sand beaches, wines grown on basket-trained vines facing the sea… The island is packed in summer, that’s the reality. But its beauty is worth it, at least once.

Mallorca, Spain

Itinéraire 5 jours majorque

Mallorca is so often underestimated. It’s usually associated with British and German beach clubs, when in fact it has some of the most spectacular beaches in Europe, the UNESCO-listed Serra de Tramuntana, and pretty villages like Deià, Sóller and Valdemossa.

Ibiza, Spain

The best mediterranean destinations: Ibiza, Spain

Ibiza is the island of contrasts. The north is quiet and rural, with hippie markets and secret coves. The south is all about the party, the clubs, and sunset beach clubs. No need to introduce this legendary island! You can experience both sides in the same week, and that’s what makes Ibiza so fascinating.

Positano, Italy (Amalfi Coast)

Positano en Italie vu depuis le port

Positano is a proper postcard landscape. Its colourful houses tumble down to the sea, its alleyways are lined with lovely boutiques, and every angle makes you want to stop and take it all in. It’s expensive and crowded in summer, but it remains an unmissable Mediterranean destination. The trick: go early in the morning or in May and September (I went there in late September and the crowds were manageable), and you’ll understand why so many artists made it their home.

Saint-Tropez, France

The best mediterranean destinations: St Tropez, France

Saint-Tropez has two faces. The yachts and private beaches, and the old village with its Place des Lices and Tuesday market. The second is worth the trip even if the first doesn’t appeal. And out of season, Saint-Tropez gets its quiet charm back, the kind you see in old French films.

Capri, Italy

The best mediterranean destinations: Capri, Italy

Capri has an almost unreal atmosphere. The Piazzetta that feels just like an open-air living room, the Blue Grotto that can be reached by rowboat, the villas perched on the rocks… It’s the island of dolce vita in its purest form, and it’s hard not to fall completely under its spell!

Cinque Terre, Italy

The best mediterranean destinations: Cinque Terre, Italy

The Cinque Terre is five villages clinging to cliffs above the Ligurian Sea, connected by hiking trails and by train. Vernazza and Manarola are the most photogenic, Monterosso the liveliest with its lovely beach. It gets very crowded in July and August, but early in the morning or in May and June, these villages take on an almost magical atmosphere with their colourful facades. You quickly understand why they’re UNESCO-listed!

Mediterranean at Its Best: For Those Who Want It All

You want beautiful beaches AND pretty villages. Great restaurants AND a terrace for aperitivo. The sea in the morning AND a good night out. While avoiding the most touristy and well-known destinations. I get you!! These destinations strike the perfect balance between relaxation, discovery and the joy of being somewhere beautiful. This is exactly what I look for most when I travel in the Mediterranean, and it’s the spirit of The Beach Muse.

So here are in my opinion the best Mediterranean destinations and villages to go on vacation to in the summer.

Paros, Greece

The best mediterranean destinations: Paros, Greece

Paros is the ideal Greek destination for combining dreamy beaches, charming villages, good food and a social atmosphere. Naoussa is a former fishing village that’s become a must-visit, while Parikia has kept its traditional character with its famous church of a hundred doors. The beaches around the island are among the most beautiful in the Cyclades, and the island of Antiparos, just a kilometre away, is absolutely worth the short trip.

Lagos, Portugal (Algarve)

Lagos is my favourite town in the Algarve. It has kept a real local identity, there are spectacular beaches a short walk from the centre like Praia do Camilo, and the evenings are lovely. Not to mention excellent restaurants serving local flavours. Ponta da Piedade at sunset, with its rock formations rising straight out of the sea, is one of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve ever seen.

Hydra, Greece

Hydra is the Greek island with no cars, no scooters, no engine noise. An absolute paradise. Donkeys carry goods & people through the cobbled streets, captains’ houses overlook the harbour, and time seems to stand completely still. You arrive by hydrofoil from Piraeus, and leave feeling like you’ve travelled to another era.

Procida, Italy

The best mediterranean destinations: Procida, Italy

Procida was Italy’s Capital of Culture in 2022, and rightly so. Its colourful facades, fishing nets hanging between the houses and its lively harbour make it one of the most beautiful islands in the Bay of Naples. It’s close to Capri, but the atmosphere couldn’t be more different!

Naxos, Greece

Maragas Beach Naxos

Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades, and one of the most authentic. Endless white sand beaches, a chora with a Venetian castle and alleyways that wind up into the hills, tavernas serving incredible food… You could spend a week here without getting bored for a single day!

Read my Naxos guide →

Çeşme & Alaçatı, Turkey

The best mediterranean destinations: Alaçati, Turkey

Alaçatı is one of the best-kept secrets in the eastern Mediterranean. A stone village with alleyways bursting with bougainvillea, characterful guesthouses, a food scene that rivals the best tables in Istanbul, and kitesurf beaches right next door. A wonderful find!

Corfu, Greece

The best mediterranean destinations

Corfu is the ultimate Ionian island, and one of my favourite destinations. I’ve been there easily ten times! Lush vegetation tumbling down to turquoise water, a UNESCO-listed old town with Venetian alleyways and pastel facades, and beaches that range from secret coves to lively stretches of sand.

Paleokastritsa is one of the most beautiful coastal panoramas in Greece, and Corfu’s old town deserves a full day to get lost in its covered passages. There are also beautiful hiking trails to explore in the shoulder season. It’s an island that works for everyone, families and couples alike, and always surprises those who expected nothing more than a beach destination!

Read my Corfu guide →

Spetses, Greece

The best mediterranean destinations: Spetses, Greece

Spetses is less well-known than Hydra but just as charming. With its quiet elegance, beaches you can reach by bicycle or water taxi, it has that rare quality of being neither too touristy nor too remote. A really lovely balance!

Cassis, France

The best mediterranean destinations: Cassis, France

Cassis is a colourful little town nestled between Marseille and La Ciotat. Its harbour, its calanques and its fishermen’s huts are unmissable. Half a day on a boat through the surrounding calanques is enough to understand why Picasso loved this place so much.

Crete, Greece

Que faire en Crète : Loutró

Crete is the largest island in Greece and a destination that has it all: pink sand beaches at Elafonisi, wild gorges like Samaria, one of the richest food cultures in the country, and charming towns like Chania that make you want to stay forever.

Vis, Croatia

The best mediterranean destinations: Vis, Croatia

Vis is the most remote of the major Croatian islands, and therefore the most unspoiled. Vineyards stretch down to the sea, the fishing village is genuinely welcoming, and the Blue Cave on the nearby island of Biševo is breathtaking. An island that hasn’t yet given in to mass tourism!

Sardinia, Italy

The best mediterranean destinations: Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia is large and wonderfully diverse. Head to the Costa Smeralda for understated luxury and emerald water, south for the wild beaches of Chia and Villasimius, and inland for pretty villages and incredible cheese. An island for those who love to explore rather than just settle in.

The Wild Escape: For Those Who Want to Get Away From It All

You want a deserted cove. Turquoise water between two rocks. No crowds. For you, a holiday means genuinely switching off, not queuing for a photo.

These destinations share one thing: they’re still largely unspoiled. Often a little harder to reach, but so much more beautiful and authentic for it.

Here are the best Mediterranean destinations for a vacation off the beaten path.

Milos, Greece

The best mediterranean destinations: Milos, Greece

Milos is a spectacular island, probably my favourite in Greece (it was also the first one I visited, and I have such special memories of it). Volcanic rocks sculpted by the sea, beaches in the most improbable shapes, fishermen’s houses right at the water’s edge… Sarakiniko looks like the surface of the moon, Tsigrado is only reachable by a rope ladder, and Firopotamos moves at that slow Greek island pace. You rent a scooter, explore all day, and come back in the evening exhausted and happy.

Milos has definitely become more famous over the last few years, but it’s still a quiet and remote destination when going anytime but in July-August!

Porquerolles, France

Porquerolles is one of the Îles d’Or, off the coast of Hyères. No cars, pine forests, beaches of an almost tropical white and water that rivals the most beautiful lagoons in the Caribbean. It’s one of the most beautiful islands in France, and still relatively unknown internationally.

Read my Porquerolles guide →

Pantelleria, Italy

The best mediterranean destinations: Pantelleria, Italy

Pantelleria is a volcanic Italian island tucked between Sicily and Tunisia. Almost no sandy beaches, but black lava coves, dammusi (traditional stone houses) and capers picked by hand. A perfect destination for hiking, eating well and taking your time.

Folegandros, Greece

The best mediterranean destinations: Folegandros, Greece

Folegandros remains one of the most preserved islands in the Cyclades. No airport, narrow alleyways, a Chora you can only cross on foot. The beaches take effort to reach, and that’s exactly why they’re so beautiful!

Kea (Tzia), Greece

Island of Kea Greece

Kea is an hour by boat from the port of Lavrio, near Athens. And yet it’s often left off itineraries entirely. Coastal walking trails, olive groves, quiet villages. It mainly attracts Athenians, which says it all!

Read my Kea guide →

Gozo, Malta

The best mediterranean destinations: Gozo, Malta

Gozo is Malta’s little sister, often overlooked in favour of Valletta. That’s a mistake! Its Azure Window cliffs, its prickly pear fields and its small blonde stone villages make it a truly unique destination. A different kind of Mediterranean, more rural and more peaceful.

Corsica, France

The best mediterranean destinations: Corsica, France

Corsica is a mountainous island that somehow combines spectacular beaches, chestnut forests, pretty traditional villages and a culture that reminds you at every turn that this isn’t quite France like anywhere else. The GR20 for the brave, the beaches of Palombaggia for everyone else!

Elba Island, Italy

The best mediterranean destinations: Elba Island, Italy

Elba is Tuscany with its feet in the water. Easy to reach by ferry from Piombino, with pink granite coves, crystal-clear water and wines produced right on the island. Napoleon was exiled here. It’s not hard to understand why leaving was difficult!

Sifnos, Greece

The best mediterranean destinations: Sifnos, Greece

Sifnos is known for its gastronomy, but also for its walking trails that connect the villages. You walk, stop at a taverna, walk on again, end up your day by the beach, watching the sunset, before enjoying a traditional Greek dinner. The pace is slow, intentionally so, and that’s exactly why people love it.

Peloponnese: Mani & Koroni, Greece

The best mediterranean destinations: Peloponnese, Greece

The Mani is the wild side of Greece, with plenty of beautiful surprises. Medieval towers rising from landscapes dotted with olive groves, roads winding between sea and mountain, nearly abandoned villages and beaches with turquoise water…

Koroni is a small harbour town with a Venetian castle and a long, quiet beach, tucked onto the last finger of the Peloponnese. There are some spectacular beaches nearby too (I’ll keep those to myself!), only reachable by boat, the kind of places you’d want to disappear to for a few days with a tent.

Oh, and the Peloponnese is also where Kalamata olives come from. The best olives in the world, in my opinion!

Parga, Greece

Parga's Bay

Parga is a small, colourful coastal town in northwestern Greece, in the Epirus region. There’s a castle overlooking the sea, hidden coves dotted around the coastline, and a laid-back atmosphere I really love. It mostly draws Greek visitors rather than international tourists, which is part of the charm.

It’s also a great base for exploring the western Greek coast: Syvota and its gorgeous lagoons, the Paxi islands, Lefkada, Corfu (though I’d recommend staying on the island itself rather than using Parga as a base for that one!).

Read my Parga guide →

Symi, Greece

The best mediterranean destinations: Symi, Greece

Symi is one of those Dodecanese islands that people often visit on a day trip from Rhodes, but which really deserves a longer stay. Its neoclassical harbour with ochre and terracotta facades is one of the most beautiful in Greece, and its coves are reached by boat from the coast.

The Cultural Journey: For the Curious Traveller

You want to get lost in a city’s alleyways, understand the history of what you’re looking at, eat like a local, and come home with memories rather than selfies. The beach is a bonus. These destinations give you all of that, with the sea as a backdrop!

Here are the best Mediterranean destinations for a cultural getaway.

Athens, Greece

Les plus belles destinations de la Méditerranée : Athènes en Grèce

Athens is so often treated as a stopover on the way to the islands, and that’s unfair. It has so much to offer! The Acropolis at sunrise, the Monastiraki neighbourhood, the tavernas of Psirri, the rooftop bars in the centre with views of the Parthenon… It’s my favourite city: the food is incredible, there are so many great bars to discover, and the sea is close by. The atmosphere is truly unique!

Porto, Portugal

Porto

Porto is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, I absolutely loved its architecture. The azulejos, the Port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, the Bolhão market, the pastéis de nata… You could spend three intense days there or settle in for two weeks and it would never feel like enough!

Read my Porto guide →

Palermo, Italy

The best mediterranean destinations: Palermo, Sicily

Palermo is Sicily at its most raw and generous. The Ballarò market, deep-fried pizza eaten standing up, the golden mosaics of the Palatine Chapel, the Arab, Norman and Spanish traces on every facade. It’s dense, a little chaotic and absolutely fascinating.

Lisbon, Portugal

Les plus belles destinations de la Méditerranée : Lisbonne au Portugal

Lisbon is the city of fado, yellow trams, miradouros and pastéis de nata eaten standing outside Pastéis de Belém! It’s a lively, chaotic city, and you’ll inevitably get lost among its hills. Honestly though, that’s the best way to find it. It is also undoubtedly one of the most beautiful capital cities in Europe.

Nice, France

The best mediterranean destinations: Nice, France

Nice is the gateway to the French Riviera, and so much more than a connecting airport. The Old Town with its baroque facades and the Cours Saleya market, the Promenade des Anglais at sunrise, the local restaurants serving proper salade niçoise. It’s a city with real character!

Florence, Italy

The best mediterranean destinations: Florence, Italy

Florence is the city of the Renaissance. The Uffizi, the Ponte Vecchio, Brunelleschi’s dome. But it’s also the bistros of the Santo Spirito neighbourhood, the gelaterias with evening queues, the markets that set up in the piazzas… A city for those who want beauty everywhere they look!

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Les plus belles destinations de la Méditerranée : Dubrovnik en Croatie

Dubrovnik might have the best-preserved old town in the entire Mediterranean. The city walls at sunset, the orange rooftops, the impossibly blue water seen from above. It has suffered from its Game of Thrones fame, but its beauty goes far beyond all that. Out of season, it really comes back to its original self!

Matera, Italy

Les plus belles destinations de la Méditerranée : Matera en Italie

Matera is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, lived in since prehistoric times. Its sassi, cave dwellings carved into the tufa rock, were long considered a national embarrassment before becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site. European Capital of Culture in 2019. A truly extraordinary destination!

Marrakech, Morocco

Les plus belles destinations de la Méditerranée : Marrakech au Maroc

Marrakech isn’t on the Mediterranean, but it has that same spirit of cultural crossroads, warmth and sensory intensity. The medina, the souks, Jemaa el-Fna in the evening, riads hidden behind anonymous doors. It’s a world unto itself!

Granada, Spain

Les plus belles destinations de la Méditerranée : Grenade en Espagne

Granada is one of the most captivating cities in Spain. The Alhambra, of course, that Nasrid palace overlooking the city whose details leave you speechless. But also the Albaicín neighbourhood with its white houses and views over the Sierra Nevada, the free tapas that come with every drink in the bars, and that sense of being at a crossroads between Europe and the Arab world that no other Andalusian city quite captures.

Menton, France

Les plus belles destinations de la Méditerranée : Menton en France

Menton is the most discreet town on the French Riviera, and perhaps the most beautiful. Tucked between the Italian border and Monaco, it has kept a gentleness that its neighbours have long since lost. The pastel facades of the old port, the terraced botanical gardens, the lemon festival in February, and that particular light that drew artists and aristocrats seeking rest for centuries. A town for wandering, not for being seen.

Chefchaouen, Morocco

Les plus belles destinations de la Méditerranée : Chefchaouen au Maroc

Chefchaouen is the blue city of the Rif mountains. Technically not on the Mediterranean, but close to the Strait of Gibraltar and about fifty kilometres from the coast. Its alleyways painted in shades of blue and indigo, its suspended atmosphere and its rooftop terraces make it a destination unlike anything else on this list!

FAQ

What is the most beautiful destination in the Mediterranean?

There’s no universal answer, it really depends on what you’re looking for! For wild, unspoiled beaches, Milos and Folegandros are hard to beat. For the perfect balance of sea, villages and food, Paros and Naxos are my personal favourites. For an intense cultural experience, Athens and Porto top my list. And for the classics that live up to the hype, Santorini, Positano and the Cinque Terre remain unmissable.

Which Mediterranean destination should I choose for a first trip?

If it’s your first time in the Mediterranean, I’d recommend Greece! The Cyclades islands like Paros or Naxos combine everything you imagine when you picture the Mediterranean: turquoise water, pretty villages, great food and a wonderful atmosphere. Athens is also worth a few days before or after the islands.

What is the best time to visit the Mediterranean?

May-June and September-October are the best periods in my opinion. The weather is mild, the sea is warm enough to swim in, the sites are less crowded and prices are much more reasonable than in peak summer. July and August are lively and sunny, but very busy at popular destinations.

Which Mediterranean destinations are most affordable?

The Peloponnese, lesser-known Greek islands like Sifnos or Kéa, and Portugal (Porto, Lagos) offer excellent value for money. On the other hand, Mykonos, Santorini, Capri and Saint-Tropez are among the most expensive destinations in the region.

Which Mediterranean destinations are best for families?

Naxos and Crete in Greece are fantastic for families: large sandy beaches, calm water, a wide range of accommodation and family-friendly restaurants. In Italy, Sardinia and Elba are also excellent options with children.

Which Mediterranean destination is best for a romantic weekend?

Hydra in Greece, Positano in Italy or Chefchaouen in Morocco are my top picks for a romantic getaway. No cars, alleyways to explore hand in hand, great restaurants… The perfect setting!

The best mediterranean destinations

Hi, I'm Sophie! I come from Paris but I've been in love with the Mediterranean for as long as I can remember. The hidden coves, the ancient villages, the flavors, the light… The Beach Muse is my way of sharing the places and people that make this corner of the world so special to me and so hard to leave.
